Math That Works

Husbands sometimes fail to process the reasoning on those economic issues the same way we wives tend to justify expenditures. For instance:

"The sale sign read "buy two pairs and get one pair free", so think of all I saved getting SIX pairs of shoes."
Or...
"I know we don't have a cat, but this great little travel-tote came free when you purchased a bag of kitty-litter."
Or...
"With the money we saved from raising our own basil instead of buying it this summer, we can renovate the kitchen."

But actually, sometimes, our mathematics work in their favor. Such was the case with our impromptu weekend in New York City.

In planning a trip to visit my friend in Ireland, while looking into booking flights, we found that a round trip fare from Atlanta through New York to Dublin cost significantly more than two round trips (ATL to NYC and NYC to Dublin....same airlines, same flights). Since hubby-dear encouraged me to spend time with our son and daughter-in-law either coming or going, I cleverly pointed out that, with booking option #2,  we could both spend a weekend in the Big Apple with money saved before my jaunt to leprechaun-land. Hurrah. And what a fun forty-eight hours it was!

It is quite humbling that these kids that we taught to cross the street are totally at ease navigating the mega-metropolis.  Nathan and Celina, completely comfortable in the subway maze, led us through culturally-rich neighborhoods (love the brownstones), under bridges, along the Highline, through parks and past architectural landmarks. Crisp fall-ish weather made exploring miles and miles of Brooklyn and Manhattan a cake-walk.

A highlight was sharing a dim sum Sunday brunch in Chinatown, reminiscent of family traditons where Celina grew up in Jamaica. It was pure culinary delight to have her picking and choosing from the lavish array of choices in little steamed wood baskets rolled to our table on carts.  Bacon-wrapped shrimp, noodles stuffed with spinach, scrumptious rice and mysterious little rolls with something yummy inside. (We trusted our guide to not bring anything weird, like fried chicken feet, on board.)

Our kids pampered us with bottomless cups of coffee, chocolates on our pillow and scrumptious steak tacos. We enjoyed leisurely lounging, catching up and getting to spoil our grand-dog Bailey, a little. We tasted of the magic of the city and got to experience the world our children live in. Could not have been more delightful!
